This is one of the most common questions asked by couples shopping for a diamond engagement ring. The answer is - neither! I'll explain but first let me say that I donot like to use the word better
for a very simple reason, it's subjective based on personal preference.
It calls for an opinion and as you know opinions vary from person to
person.
The real question is which one is more durable? The
answer is platinum, although if properly cared for, both will
definitely be around long after you are gone. Platinum is by far more
durable than white gold. In fact, it is the most durable of what we
call the "noble" metals which are platinum, gold and silver. It also
happens to be much more rare than either gold or silver, therefore it
costs much more.
If you are on a tight budget you will probably
want to consider white gold. If the difference in price is not an
issue, most people go with platinum.
Another thing to consider
when choosing white gold is how it is manufactured. Some manufacturers
rhodium plate their white gold pieces. Rhodium is part of the platinum
group of metals. After a piece of white gold jewelry is cast it is then
submerged in liquid rhodium and then buffed to a high polish. This is
what gives the piece its high white shine. In its purist form, most
white gold has a slight yellowish cast to it. That is why it is dipped
in rhodium.
